Artificial Intelligence (Beginner)

This course provides a beginner-friendly introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on foundational concepts, practical use, and critical awareness of generative AI. Designed for learners with no prior AI or programming experience, the course builds essential AI literacy for personal, professional, and community contexts.

Students learn core AI terminology, explore what AI systems can and cannot do, and gain hands-on experience using widely available AI tools to generate ideas, create and refine content, summarize information, and support everyday tasks. Emphasis is placed on developing effective prompting skills, understanding common limitations such as bias and hallucinations, and learning how to evaluate AI outputs with human judgment.

The course also situates AI within broader social, ethical, and environmental contexts. Learners examine responsible AI practices, including data privacy, bias mitigation, environmental impact, and the importance of transparency and human oversight. Indigenous perspectives are woven throughout the curriculum, highlighting how Indigenous artists, communities, and organizations engage with AI, and exploring Indigenous approaches to data governance, ethics, and emerging technologies.
