Indigenous-Led AI Innovation

The FLAIR project uses AI tools to support the documentation and revitalization of Indigenous languages by generating immersive language resources, augmented reality experiences, and adaptive learning models. Grounded in community leadership and linguistic expertise, FLAIR demonstrates how AI can be shaped to amplify language use while respecting unique language structures, cultural contexts, and community priorities.

Heritage Lab applies cutting-edge digital technologies, including AI, to co-create cultural heritage tools that document, preserve, and share Indigenous knowledge, stories, and artistic traditions. Working with Nations and cultural holders, Heritage Lab focuses on community-driven digital projects that reflect Indigenous epistemologies and safeguard cultural integrity in the design of technological tools.

Haíɫzaqv Nation has developed an AI-enabled fish monitoring system that supports sustainable fisheries management by analyzing real-time environmental and species data. By combining Indigenous ecological knowledge with machine learning systems, this initiative strengthens stewardship of marine resources while asserting local authority over how environmental data are collected, interpreted, and used in decision-making.

Danielle Boyer’s SkoBot project explores how robotics and AI can support Indigenous education and cultural engagement, integrating Indigenous languages and worldviews into interactive technologies. SkoBot bridges cultural knowledge and emerging tech in ways that respect relational accountability while inspiring youth participation in STEM grounded in Indigenous identity.

wâsikan kisewâtisiwin, led by Shani Gwen, is a writing tool that uses AI to assist non-Indigenous people in writing about Indigenous Peoples. Like other plug-in subscription tools that assist writers with grammar and spelling, wâsikan kisewâtisiwin will correct unconscious bias or racism in written material. Indigenous Peoples have educated AI and will continue to develop it by and with Indigenous Peoples.
